Hika ahi, our Matariki ritual

  • Te Papa Amphitheatre (entry through Red Gates) 55 Cable Street Wellington, 6011 New Zealand (map)
People floating lights on the pond at Te Papa.

Nau mai, haere mai. We warmly invite your whole whānau to a ritual to mark Matariki, the Māori New Year.

Gather round the fire to listen to the Māori creation story. Discover Tane, who put stars in the heavens, and hear about the maramataka, the Māori lunar calendar. Place lights on the pond to farewell loved ones and give thanks.

Hear about Matariki and Hiwa-i-te-rangi, the star towards which we send our hopes and dreams. Write down your aspirations and place them in a community basket.

Bring tokens of loved ones to farewell, and of your hopes and dreams – and a blanket!

If it’s wet, we’ll go inside. Check social media for weather updates.
